Roles and Responsibilities of Pattern Maker
For every person in factory – roles and responsibilities are pre-defined. In apparel industry pattern maker is one of the key person.
In this article, I tried to summarize roles and responsibilities of pattern maker in following 5 points.
Make Pattern
For sample or bulk orders, depending upon the garment design the pattern maker must understand the Tech pack. The pattern maker should create all types of pattern (production, marking and nested pattern) and all the pattern of garment components accurately. The final pattern should include all the details like name of the pattern, reference lines, grain line, style number, number of cuts and seam allowance.
Make the pattern as per product is the first responsibility of pattern maker.
Grade Pattern
Once the pattern is developed, the pattern maker should grades the pattern in small, medium, large and extra-large as per the buyer’s requirements given in the grading chart of tech pack.
Grade pattern as per grading chart is the second responsibility of pattern maker.
Check the Patterns Accurately
To avoid subsequent problem, pattern maker must check all the patterns for the garment components. In this process, pattern maker confirms number of pattern for given garments and details mentioned on the pattern and grading. Once pattern maker confirms that all patterns are ok then patterns are sent to CAD department
Check pattern and hand over to CAD department is the third responsibility of pattern maker.
Correct the Pattern if Needed
Many times, there is need of corrections to be done in pattern as measurements in the final product are out of tolerance. Many times the quality of garment does not match the expectations then pattern maker should do corrections in the pattern until proper fit, measurement and quality is achieved.
Solve the problem by correcting the pattern to get best fit, measurement and quality in the garment is fourth responsibility of pattern maker.
Keep Database of All Patterns
If patterns are developed manually, proper bundling of pattern should be done at safe place so that for repeated orders pattern can be reused or modified as per the requirement.
If patterns are developed with the help of pattern making software then the patterns should be saved in neatly labeled folder so that in future it would be easy for pattern maker to find and do modification
Keep patterns neatly for future orders is fifth responsibility of pattern maker.
